Exercise to go the distance.

Will You be Able to Go the Distance?

Okay, perhaps a better question – how will you feel and what shape will you be in when you get there?  Or, how will you feel along the journey?

It is my sincere hope that the information we share here and the conversations we have, can save your life… or greatly improve it.  However, ultimately no matter how good the information — there remains… personal choice.  The purpose of this blog is to help you make wise choices for optimum health in the areas of nutrition, fitness/activity, mental health, rest and more.

What if I told you there is a pill currently available that not only cured your ills… but made you feel absolutely fabulous!  What if I said it was developed by a renowned physician backed up by “research”!

Would you buy it?   Would you take it?  Would you believe?

No?

As bizarre as that sounds, this is what we see in medicine today. Well, okay all except for the feeling fabulous part.  No matter how we care for our bodies, no matter what we put into them, once they break, we expect our doctors to fix it with medicine. We want small manageable – “once per day” solutions to what took years to create. We want health and wellness in a pill – no effort.

Who caused this situation anyway?

Let’s not be confused, we caused our own demise. Perhaps it was confusion about the information we received… about what is “healthy”.  Regardless, here we are sick.  Furthermore, we believe what our doctor tells us only to be confronted with a bombardment of new problems brought on by side effects of the medicine. I don’t have to tell you about the cost, except to say that it’s going up.

We don’t want to be bothered with “healthy eating” or “wellness tips”. It just makes us feel bad about our saturated fat laden, greasy, tasty treat of a meal we plan for dinner. We don’t want to be reminded that any movement would be an improvement over inactivity. We’re content to let it slide until something goes wrong. A test result comes back – malignant, or perhaps less dramatic – high cholesterol, high blood pressure, or high blood sugar. We just don’t want to hear about it.

This is the most powerful, innovative nation in the world.

In case your thinking that we’ve never been a more healthy nation — that’s the way we used to be, we’re getting better, check out the statistics. Today, our obesity rate in the United States enjoys a steady acceleration. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in 1990 10 states had a prevalence of obesity rate of 10%. In 2007 only one state (Colorado) had a prevalence rate of less than 20%. Thirty states had prevalence equal to or greater than 20%; three of those states (Alabama, Mississippi and Tennessee) had a prevalence of obesity equal to or greater than 30%.

Check out your state and watch the progression from 1985 to 2016. https://www.cdc.gov/obesity/data/prevalence-maps.html

The CDC 2020 Adult Obesity Prevalence Maps for 50 states, the District of Columbia, and 2 US territories show self-reported adult obesity prevalence by race, ethnicity, and location.

BMI Update May 2022 shows that we're heading in the wrong direction.

Here’s the skinny.

Alright, is this a weight-loss blog site? Yes and no. Because obesity opens us up to a whole host of diseases, that is why I choose these statistics. The statistics for high blood pressure (hypertension), diabetes, coronary heart disease, stroke and others carry similar shocking numbers. What is more shocking to me and the purpose and cause of this blog is that many of these diseases/conditions are totally preventable.

There is a radical change needed today. We need a fundamental change in the way we see our own personal health. If you’re like me, you view your own health as just that – Yours. I think somewhere along the way we have given that power over to doctors and other health care folks.

On Healthy Rant you’ll learn practical steps to make critical changes in your health and wellness, both big and small. This blog will help you take control of your life and put your health and wellness back in your hands.  So, join the conversation, come back and contribute.  Be sure to sign up for your copy of  “Five Habits To Transform Your Health And Lose Weight” and be sure to give me your thoughts.
